DX Coil Replacement Questions, Answered.

What is a DX coil?

A DX (direct expansion) coil is the evaporator coil in a refrigeration circuit. Liquid refrigerant boils inside the tubes and absorbs heat directly from the airstream, cooling the air in rooftop units, air handlers, and split systems.

What's the difference between a DX coil and a chilled water coil?

A DX coil cools air with refrigerant boiling inside the tubes. A chilled water coil cools air with water supplied by a central chiller. DX is common in packaged and split equipment; chilled water is common in larger central-plant systems. If your system uses chilled water, see our replacement chilled water coils.

Can I replace a DX coil with a different refrigerant than the original?

Often, yes, but it is an engineering decision, not a swap. Moving from R-22 to a modern refrigerant, or from R-410A to R-454B or R-32, changes operating pressures, capacity, and metering requirements. Cooney Technologies engineers the replacement coil for the target refrigerant and reviews the circuit before fabrication.

What information do you need to quote a replacement DX coil?

Casing dimensions, connection sizes and locations, fin and tube data, circuiting, refrigerant, and capacity or nameplate data. Our measuring templates walk through every field. If you'd rather not measure it yourself, request a site visit and we'll capture everything in person.

Why do DX and evaporator coils freeze up?

Low airflow, low refrigerant charge, and low load are the usual suspects: the coil surface drops below freezing, condensate turns to ice, and the ice further blocks airflow in a self-feeding cycle.
