Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I need a new tube bundle or a whole new heat exchanger?
In most cases, the shell outlasts the bundle inside it. A Cooney site visit measures the existing shell and tells you whether a bundle replacement is enough or whether the unit itself needs to be replaced.
What’s the difference between a plate & frame and a shell & coil heat exchanger?
A plate & frame unit stacks gasketed plates and is compact but relies on gaskets that wear under steam service. A shell & coil unit uses a single continuous coiled tube instead of a tube bundle and tube sheet, with fewer joints and less to leak. Watson McDaniel's Heat Miser® is designed around a plate & frame core; the Heli-Flow® is a shell & tube design with baffles, and Thermo-Pack® is a shell & coil design.
What is a double wall heat exchanger, and do I need one?
A double wall heat exchanger has two physical barriers between the fluids, so a leak vents to atmosphere instead of mixing the fluids. It's typically required for potable water, food & beverage, and process applications.
Can Cooney supply a replacement unit or components for my existing AIC or Watson McDaniel heat exchanger?
Yes. Cooney supplies heat exchangers across the AIC line and is a stocking Watson McDaniel distributor, including Heat Miser® and Heli-Flow® components. A site visit confirms model and configuration before anything is quoted.
Do you have tube bundles for other manufacturers’ shells?
Yes. Cooney supplies replacement tube bundles engineered to fit shells from Patterson-Kelley, Thrush, American Standard, Taco, CEMLine, Bell & Gossett, and other major manufacturers, in straight tube or U-tube, single or double wall.
How long does a replacement take?
Lead time depends on the equipment, configuration and materials. Tube bundle replacements typically run 1–2 weeks, while complete heat exchanger lead times can vary significantly. A basic unit may take 7–8 weeks. An early site visit helps confirm what is needed and keeps the replacement process moving before the existing unit fails completely.
What is Thermo-Pack® and how is it different from what I have now?
Thermo-Pack® is Cooney’s engineered shell-and-coil steam-to-water heat exchanger system. Unlike a conventional shell-and-tube unit, it uses fully welded 316L stainless steel coils, so there is no removable tube bundle to maintain or replace. Its cross-counterflow design delivers 10–15% greater efficiency than a standard shell-and-tube unit, and the heat exchanger is backed by a five-year warranty.
