Smart Coil

Freeze Block® stops coil rupture. Smart Coil alerts you the moment it happens. Wire it into your building automation system to program your BAS to protect itself from freeze and thaw damage, automatically.

  • Detects valve deployment, not just cold air near the coil
  • Signals your BAS when a freeze event occurs
  • Allows your BAS to trigger a programmed response

In Mission-Critical Facilities, You Need to Know

What happens without monitoring in mission-critical facilities:

No alert reaches facilities — the system experienced a freeze event, but the people responsible for the building don't know

The same condition repeats — a stuck damper or failed control sequence continues operating incorrectly across multiple units

Smart Coil turns freeze protection into a visible building event

Smart Coil monitors the Freeze Block valve and sends a signal when the valve deploys. The signal connects to your building automation system, where your team can program the response that fits the application.

How Smart Coil Works

1

Freeze Condition Occurs

2

Freeze Block releases fluid

3

Smart Coil detects it

4

BAS receives the signal

5

Your team fixes the cause

Suggested BAS Response
  • Shut down the fan
  • Close outside air dampers
  • Open a hot water valve or start a circulating pump
  • Signal an audio or visual alarm at the control room
  • Push an alert to email or mobile device to notify facilities

From a protected coil to a connected system

Freeze Block protects the coil. Smart Coil connects it to the building.

Freeze Block Coils are engineered to handle the freeze event on their own. The valve deploys, fluid releases, the coil reseats, and the unit returns to operation without rupture.

The rupture problem is solved. But in a hospital, lab, or data center, that's not enough.

A valve deployment means something failed upstream. A stuck damper. A bad control sequence. A steam pressure drop. Without an alert, that condition keeps running.

Smart Coil Technology for Unit Ventilators

Unit ventilators with Smart Coil technology are the most reliable way to keep classrooms comfortable year-round without sacrificing performance.

When freezing conditions exist, Freeze Block® valves deploy a small amount of fluid to prevent the coil from rupturing. Smart Coil's self-contained BMS shuts down the fan and closes the louvers to prevent damage from freeze and thaw conditions automatically.

Why Smart Coil belongs on every classroom unit ventilator

  • Frozen HVAC coils put unit vents out of operation and displace classrooms.
  • Smart Coil responds to actual valve deployment, not a temperature reading.
  • No nuisance shutdowns during cold snaps.
  • The self-contained BMS acts immediately to protect the system.

4 Winters of Coil Freeze Protection

Smart Coil extends the Freeze Block® warranty from 30 months to 48 months — covering 100% of the coil. That's four winters of peace of mind, backed by thousands of installations accross North America and extensive field testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a recommended sequence of operations for Smart Coil?

Yes. When the Smart Coil sensor detects Freeze Block valve deployment, the BAS should execute the manufacturer's standard freeze stat sequence: shut down the supply fan, close outside air dampers, and open the hot water valve or start the circulating pump. The difference is that Smart Coil triggers on actual valve deployment — not ambient air temperature — so the response corresponds to a real freeze condition, not a nuisance trip.

Will Smart Coil cause nuisance alarms?

No. Unlike freeze stats, which trip based on air temperature near the coil, Smart Coil monitors Freeze Block valve deployment directly. It only alarms when fluid is actually being released from the coil due to a freeze event. Condensation, cold drafts, and temperature fluctuations do not trigger the sensor.

How does Smart Coil integrate with my building automation system?

The Smart Coil sensor is wired to a control module that communicates with any BAS. The signal can be programmed to trigger any combination of responses: fan shutdown, damper closure, valve actuation, pump activation, audio/visual alarms, and email or mobile alerts. No proprietary protocol is required.

Is Smart Coil required on all Freeze Block coils?

Smart Coil is required on all Freeze Block® coils installed in unit ventilators. For all other applications, it is strongly recommended — it extends the Freeze Block warranty from 30 months to 48 months and gives your BAS the signal it needs to protect the system automatically when a freeze event occurs.

Can I specify Smart Coil for new air handling units?

Yes. Freeze Block + Smart Coil can be factory-installed by any OEM air handling unit manufacturer before the unit ships. Cooney Technologies coordinates directly with the manufacturer. No additional footprint or modifications are required.

How many sensors can be used with a single control box?

Multiple sensors can be connected to a single Smart Coil control module. Contact Cooney Technologies engineering support for sizing guidance on multi-coil or multi-unit installations.

Is the control box rated for outdoor use?

Contact Cooney Technologies for enclosure ratings and outdoor installation guidance specific to your application.

What is the difference between Smart Coil and a freeze stat?

A freeze stat is a temperature-sensing switch that shuts down the unit when air temperature drops near freezing. It reacts to ambient conditions, not coil conditions, which causes nuisance alarms and does not confirm whether a freeze event actually occurred. Smart Coil monitors the Freeze Block valve directly — it triggers only when the valve actually deploys fluid, confirming a real freeze event and giving your BAS the signal to respond automatically.

Does Smart Coil work with chilled water coils? Will condensation trigger the sensor?

The Smart Coil sensor monitors Freeze Block valve deployment, not surface moisture. Condensation on chilled water coil surfaces does not trigger the sensor. Smart Coil is available for both fluid (hot water, chilled water, glycol) and steam Freeze Block coils.
